New Senators are named for the PNM

People’s National Movement (PNM) leader Dr Keith Rowley  named three new Opposition Senators yesterday .These were  former minister/MP Camille Robinson-Regis; defeated Chaguanas West bye-election candidate , Avinash Singh; and radio announcer/television newsreader, Diane Baldeo-Chadeesingh.

Pennelope Beckles-Robinson and Fitzgerald Hinds  who are both attorneys were removed to make place for two new senators .

Mrs Robinson-Regis will replace Mrs  Beckles-Robinson as Senate Opposition Chief Whip .

By naming Singh as a Senator after his resounding defeat as PNM candidate in the Chaguanas West bye-election the party seems to have changed their position on naming candidates who have faced the polls and lost ,to the post of Senator which was  their position in the 2000 general election when  the then Prime Minister  Basdeo Panday named some persons as senator after their defeat at the polls .

On his Facebook page, Singh, 25, thanked  Dr Rowley for his Senate appointment.

“This opportunity reaffirms his  commitment to young people and it will give a voice to thousands of citizens and in particular farmers, especially in Central Trinidad who now have representation in the Upper House of our Parliament,” Singh wrote.

Meanwhile  Mrs  Baldeo-Chadeesingh was fired by CCN TV6 where she was the newsreader for its weekend newscasts  for not informing her employers that she was taking this political post .
